LONDON: Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party, Ms. Benazir Bhutto has vowed to return to the country and win her way back to power. Saying that she would launch a campaign based on providing food, clothing and shelter to the poor people, she announced she would go back to basics and invoke her late father’s name – Zulfikar Ali Bhutto – to return to power. She said her campaign would be inspired by the old slogan of her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) – ‘Roti, Kapra, Makan” (food, clothing, shelter).
“Under my leadership, the PPP will bring moderation, democracy and the basics that the nation’s poorest need,” she told a UK daily. “We represent the underprivileged, the peasants, women, young people, the minorities, all those who have been neglected by elite governments.” Bhutto also confirmed talks with representatives of President Pervez Musharraf for a power-sharing deal. “Pakistani politics is a roller coaster ride,” she said. “We were 80 per cent there, then negotiations stalled, then we started off again. My return will take place irrespective of the dialogue process.” The PPP will announce on September 14 the date of Bhutto’s return to Pakistan.-SANA
