Death toll swells to 9 in collapsed bridge

KARACHI: Death toll in a shocking incident of Northern by pass Bridge rose to nine while measures were undertaken to remove the debris and concrete of the bridge. According to sources, the death toll in the collapse of the northern by-pass bridge has risen to nine after some bodies were recovered from the debris. Part of the newly constructed bridge, recently inaugurated by the President General Pervez Musharraf in August, had collapsed on Saturday with a big bang that the people of the surroundings thought it as earthquake.

Yesterday five persons were reported killed on the spot and dozens others sustained injuries while scores of persons were trapped beneath the broken bridge. The provincial and city governments along with the National Highway Authority are making all out efforts to remove the massive blocks of the collapsed part of the bridge. Heavy machinery is being used by the city government while help is also being sought from the engineering department of armed forces and Sui Southern Gas Company for the purpose.

Strict vigilance is also being observed to keep the vehicles and people away from damaged part of the bridge to avoid any further mishap. Authorities have been urged to expedite the work and remove the wreckage as soon as possible. Government officials of the view that thorough investigation would be made to probe the incident and to ascertain the cause of the incident. Stern action would be taken against those responsible for using sub-standard material in the bridge construction.-SANA
