ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has said that public confidence in the courts has been restored and every decision of the courts enjoyed the support of people of Pakistan. Talking to delegations of Free Legal Aid Committee, Pakistan Bar Council and Lahore High Court Bar, Multan Bench and Bahawalpur Bench, he said that no one will be able to violate the court verdicts due to the public confidence and trust. “The decisions given by the superior courts are public property. One hundred and sixty million people of Pakistan are the custodians of courts decision and they will ensure that these decisions are not violated and implemented in true spirit,” he stated.
Responding to a query regarding shortage of Judges in courts, Chief Justice said that all the appointments to the higher judiciary should be made on merit in a transparent manner. He said there is no delay on part of Supreme Court, adding that he would ask the government to take necessary action in this regard and appoint judges as soon as possible. He said that a case of appointment of Judges in Sindh High Court had come to Supreme Court, has been processed and soon the Judges will be appointed. Elaborating the Suo Motu actions public interest cases Chief Justice said that High Courts and District and Session Courts will be involved to provide relief to the common man. “But there are same legal issues which are being looked into to improved the system” he added.
Chief Justice said that society showed trust and faith in the lawyer’s movement and even people from far flung areas participated in it. Now lawyers have to fulfill the responsibility and take further the trust posed in them by the people of Pakistan, he mentioned. Referring to the quick disposal of the cases in the lower courts, he said, “The responsibility upon you have doubled due to the trust and confidence bestowed upon you by the society and you have to ensure that services provided by you are effective and efficient.” He said that disposal of cases is an issue which affects the common man and the courts needed to look into it very seriously. Chief Justice said Bar and Bench are like a family and they should work together to provide services to the people.
Earlier the Presidents of the Free Legal Aid Committee, Pakistan Bar Council and Lahore High Court Bar, Multan Bench and Bahawalpur Bench showed their confidence in the Chief Justice. They appreciated the role of the civil society in the lawyer’s movement and assured the Chief Justice that they will fully participate in his mission to provide justice to the poor people and common man of Pakistan. President Free Legal Aid Committee Ramazan Chaudhry said that the Legal Aid Committee had visited jails and Dar-ul-Aman, and was very active in providing services to those poor and needy people who cannot hire lawyers.-SANA
