ISLAMABAD:President Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal and Amir of Jama’at-e-Islami Pakistan Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that General Musharraf must resign as President of Pakistan and wait for two years to take any public office according to the country’s constitution.Talking to a private TV channel he said Benazir Bhutto claims to be champion of democracy but looking for back door channels to come to power by striking a deal with undemocratic and unconstitutional government.

He appreciated the Supreme Court’s decision, allowing Sharif brothers to return to Pakistan. Judiciary, he said, is independent now and people of Pakistan have gained trust in judiciary. Commenting on Nawaz Sharif’s return, Qazi said every citizen has the right to come to Pakistan and play his due role in country’s politics. He said all exiled political leaders should return and the government must deal with them according to law. Let the court decide if there are cases against anybody, he added.

Referring to the agreement between Musharraf and Benazir he said that Musharraf took office of the president illegally and unconstitutionally, and if a military man does not value his professional oath he must be penalized. “If military personnel violates his professional oath and indulge in politics, he must be penalized instead of prolonging his rule,” he stated. He said the Musharraf can enter into politics if he shed his uniform and wait for two year to play any role in politics according to the Article 63 of the constitution. Martial law and dictatorships are uncultured ways to rule, he stated. To a query he said that is in the fundamental rights and duties of each citizen to strive for the supremacy of law and constitution. He made it clear that masses welcomed martial law in the past because they were fed up with the policies of civilian government. Now the whole scenario has changed. Unpopular and unwise policies of General Musharraf have widened the gap between masses and armed forces and people would not welcome imposition of martial law, he added.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that constitution as well as law does not allow military to indulge in politics. The law about president’s uniform is discriminatory which had come into force just for one particular person, he added. He said that people want to elect their representatives through free and fair election under an impartial election commission. General Musharraf, he said, is aware of this fact and that is why he is retreating. Threatening the nation and displaying the punches did not suit any leader, he added. He said that there is no possibility of imposition of martial law or emergency in the country. People now want to establish a civilized and democratic society in which rule of law reign.

Answering to another question he said that the time is running short out for Musharraf and MMA would neither support nor accept him in or without uniform. He ruled out any differences within MMA leadership. The Alliance, he said, united and there is no rift in MMA ranks. MMA leaders have only one policy that they would not negotiate with the present government. Nor would they strike any deal with the government. Qazi said that some elements were bending upon to create rifts in MMA and break the alliance but they would not be succeeded. MMA is united and would be united in the next general elections, he added.-SANA
