ISLAMABAD: Unprecedented changes are expected in the government in the next couple of days under which Governor Sindh Ishrat-ul-Ibad would be appointed as Acting Prime Minister while President General Pervez Musharraf would step down as Chief of Army Staff in the wake of possible deal between Musharraf and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
Reliable sources disclosed this agency that deal between General Musharraf and PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has been almost finalized under which Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul-Ibad will take over as Acting Prime Minister while Core Commander Rawalpindi Tariq Majeed Kiyani would replace General Musharraf as Chief of Army Staff. Under the deal, Musharraf would step down as Chief of Army Staff, and an announcement to this effect is expected this week. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), in return, would prepare ground for him in the Article 63 of the constitution that would enable him to be President of Pakistan.
However prominent legal expert Sharif-ud-Din Pirzada has commented on the deal as saying Musharraf can be elected as president if amendments made to clause 1 of Article 63. Under Article 63, no retired government servant can hold a public office for two years after his/her retirement. Source also disclosed that session of National Assembly would be called in this regard in early September in which Pakistan Muslim League (Q) would make the required amendments to Article 63 with the support of PPP.
Earlier Benazir Bhutto proposed Kashmir Committee Chairman Hamid Nasir Chatta’s name for the post of Acting Prime Minister however some external powers put Ishrat-ul-Ibad for the slot to which Benazir agreed, source said. In this connection President Musharraf’s special advisor Tariq Aziz also had a meeting with MQM Chief Altaf Hussain in London and discussed important matter related to the issue. Sources also confirmed that the name of General Ishfaq Kiyani, Director General ISI, who played an important role in the deal between Benazir and Musharraf was under consideration to be the next Chief of Army Staff but the same powers also objected to it and put forward Core Commander Rawalpindi Tariq Majeed Kiyan for the slot. General Ishfaq Kiyani would now be given the post of Chief of Army Staff, sources said.-SANA
