ISLAMABAD:President General Pervez Musharraf has said that the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been conveyed a message by a most respected personality and well wisher of Pakistan to abide by the agreement he concluded with him to remain out of the country for ten years.He was addressing a public gathering at Pind Dadan Khan after performing ground breaking ceremony of 1.5 billion rupees bridge over river Jhelum.
President Musharraf said that Nawaz Sharif concluded a written agreement with that important personality to remain in exile for ten years and now he is talking of returning to Pakistan. Talking about Sharif family, Musharraf said these people went out of the country on their own will, and only to escape imprisonment in Pakistan. They were sending messages to that important personality to help them get out of the country and rescue them, he added.
President said the same personality requested him to let them (Sharif family) leave Pakistan and stay in exile for ten years. They went out of the country on their own free will and only to save themselves, he stated. He said if these people had not left Pakistan they still would have been behind the bars. The President asked them to honour the agreement, stay in exile and complete the exile time period.
President Pervez Musharraf said the vested interests are trying to create uncertainty in the country and urged the people not to pay any heed to them. He said in order to counter any threat, political reconciliation is imperative, adding that country needs stability, national consensus and political reconciliation. About the overall development in the country, Musharraf said a record 520 billion rupees have been earmarked for the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) in the current financial year.
He said from 1998 to 1999 the PSDP allocations were hovering around about eighty billion rupees but today Punjab alone has been provided with 150 billion rupees. In the past such huge amounts for development were not possible because the national exchequer was empty, he added. He said now full focus is on development and prosperity of the people. The government, he said, is endeavoring for uplift in the rural areas and soon every village would have mobile telecom facilities which would help speed up the process of development and reduce poverty.
President vowed to construct all water reservoirs including Kalabagh Dam and said that these vital projects are lifeline of the country. He said the brick lining of water courses and construction of new canals would not only achieve better water management but would also bolster the agriculture sector. The President said a number of fly-overs, under-passes, new road and rail networks, new airports and sea ports are being constructed which would bring about a new era of progress and prosperity. He also announced construction of Jalalpur Canal which would cost about 3.3 billion rupees and would help irrigate 33 thousand acres of barren land in the region.
The President also announced a number of other development projects for the area including a road from Lilla interchange to GT Road which would be completed in two phases, and other health and water sewerage schemes for district Jhelum. The Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool speaking on the occasion said networks of road and other development projects are being carried out in the Punjab and other provinces as a result of policies of General Pervez Musharraf.
He said under the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf the country has been put on the path of socio-economic development. On the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi said country, in accordance with the vision of the President, has achieved unprecedented development and referred to a number of development schemes being undertaken in Punjab which would help bring socio-economic uplift and improvement in the life of the people.
Federal Minister for Population Welfare Chaudhry Shahabaz said that President Pervez Musharraf’s re-election would be highly vital for the continuity and sustainability of the economic policies.
