Mobile Advertising – What’s Next

Mobile advertising is a sector of the advertising industry which is ready to explode. Given that nearly everyone owns a mobile phone these days, the future of mobile advertising is very bright. While SMS based advertising was the first step, Mobile internet advertising has much more to offer due to its ability to tap into the user context and show ads in a non intrusive manner. For e.g. if a user is browsing a sports site on his mobile, then the user could be served with an ad from Reebok. The power of the mobile advertising stems from its ability to serve extremely relevant ads to users.

Experts around the world believe that the industry is only at its infancy and is poised for phenomenal growth in the emerging markets like India and Pakistan. The reason is the low PC penetration and limited wired internet availability. Mobile web is providing the first internet experience to most users. Mobile operators are accelerating the market growth by providing low-cost reliable internet connections. mKhoj, the leading mobile ad network in Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa recorded a traffic growth of 200% in Pakistan during the 4th quarter of 2008, the highest in the region.

So what makes mobile advertising so tempting? The answer lies in the inherent advantages of mobile as a medium. The reach of the mobile medium is tremendous and has spilled well beyond the larger cities. Brands tie up with ad networks to leverage this ability to reach out to the masses and increase their brand awareness. Mobile ad networks like mKhoj are constantly trying to improve the tools and technology used to provide users with relevant ads. Ads vary depending on the economic status of the user like a watch company advertisement showing an uber-cool trendy watch for youth and more sophisticated elegant watch for an adult. Similarly parameters like operator, demography, handset capabilities, user profile etc provide ways to be able to deliver contextually relevant ads to the users.

This brings us to the question of what more can the industry offer. Naveen Tewari, Founder & CEO of mKhoj believes that ad formats will soon start taking into account the available bandwidth and screen size to improve its display. He says,

“In the very near future campaigns will be more mobile device-centric and will fully leverage the capabilities of the device. For e.g. the ads for a video ad will only be shown on mobiles which have the capability of video streaming and other phones will be served with banner ads. User patterns and preferences would be the key to ad relevance keeping in mind privacy concerns of the users. Imagine passing by a movie theatre and your mobile page will have an ad showing the trailers of the movies running in the theatre… At mKhoj, we believe that the future of mobile advertising lies in creativity, innovation and technology coming together to enhance the user experience.”

“Social No-Working”- FaceBook

“Social No-Working”- FaceBook

Recently I have been going through an article that titled “Social No-Working”. Facebook is a Social Networking service that is meant to bring friends and relatives more close. I have also found my long time friends in this site who are not in touch for more than 15 years! We share lot of stories about our personal life and comment a lot about job. Commenting about job is not very safe at least in Facebook now. Recently in that article I have seen a 16 year old girl named Kimberley Swann of Clacton on Sea in England was sacked from her company for mentioning in Facebook that her job was boring. She used to work in Ivell Marketing and Logistics Limited. I researched more on this and was trying to find what the hell she has written that turned her job life a hell. Exactly what she has written is as follows:

““all i do is shred holepunch n scan paper!!! omg!‘” … “im so totally bord!!!”

Her former boss Steve Ivell justified the sacking as Swann ‘publicly’ posted comments and shared them with coworkers. UK Tabloids such as The Sun placed in newspaper as “Social No-Working”. Also most recently same incident occurred for Virgin Airlines as well as British Airways for calling its passengers as “Smelling & Annoying” in Facebook.

Essex BBC got a few quotes:

Her mother, Janette, 41, said: “I think she’s been treated totally unfairly. She didn’t mention the company’s name. “This is a 16-year-old child we’re talking about. She says Clacton is boring but we’re not going to throw her out of the house for it.”

Mr Ivell said: “Ivell Marketing is a small, close-knit family company and it is very important that all the staff work together in harmony. “Had Miss Swann put up a poster on the staff notice board making the same comments and invited other staff to read it there would have been the same result.”
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said employers needed “thicker skins” in relation to social networking websites.
She said: “Most employers wouldn’t dream of following their staff down the pub to see if they were sounding off about work to their friends.”

Now a few things according to me:

1) What Miss Swann has said is wrong. It definitely hampers a companies’ Pride. But on careful study of the statement it is clear that she has not mentioned any name. Then how can her boss fire her?
2) If someday a person is kicked for this reason he can also say that now a days hacking a Facebook account is not a big deal. Then what is the proof that his or her account was not hacked and somebody else has not written the abusing statement?
In this recession market none of the job is stable. The Big Boss searches for a little reason and if they found it, it takes not even a minute for him or her to become an adamant boss like that of Peter parker’s boss in his Daily Bugle newspaper. In my personal experience I have seen how people are loosing their jobs in a moment without any reason. How their bonuses are cut down and how they are treated in their workplace. Its really feels bad to sign a Pink Letter for someone whereas it is of great pride for some people to do the same.

Facebook is site where people can share their views and comments and it’s a social right for a person to speak against something they don’t like. If I were the boss of Miss Swann then really I would have called her asked her what was the reason to say such things instead of sacking her. It should be remembered critics are the person who make us better.

SECP amendments Companies Ordinance, 1984

ISLAMABAD: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) introduced amendments in the Sixth Schedule to the Companies Ordinance, 1984 to facilitate the online submission of documents by companies to Company Registration Offices of SECP.

The fees for online services have been set lower as compared to manual submission. Registration fee for a company having share capital of less than Rs. 100,000 is just Rs. 2500 for online submission (the same as prescribed earlier), while it has been raised to Rs. 5,000 for manual submission.

This has been done due to the reason that manual submission is expensive, time consuming, involves paper-work, resources, etc. The same was also creating delays and difficulties such as data reliability. A Fee of Rs. 200 for filing of returns was introduced in 1993. This fee has now been enhanced to Rs. 500 in case of online filing and Rs.1000 in physical filing. This raise in filing fee is quite nominal and considered necessary to cover the escalating administrative costs.

Normally, companies file two returns per annum and annual cost comes to Rs.1000 in case of online submission and Rs. 2,000 in case of manual submission. Online service has expedited the processes, making them easier and cost effective. It saves time as well as resources, increases efficiency, and creates a paperless and hassle free environment. Those who need to file returns as well as register companies can do so from the comfort of their offices without the need to visit SECP offices.

Promoters of Companies are now also not required to print their Memorandum and Articles of Association which is another step towards cost saving. This has also resulted in expediting the process of registration of companies. Now, search of company name is instant and confirmation of availability of name is issued within 24 hours. However in the case of manual submission the process takes 2-3 days.

To assist online e-Services users in obtaining the Digital Signature Certificates (DSC’s), National Institutional Facilitation Technologies (Pvt.) Limited (NIFT), the company which provides Digital Signatures, has also posted its officers at Company Registration Offices (CRO’s) of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and DSCs are issued at these facilitation centers of the CRO’s. In case of filing of returns, only one authorized signatory and not all the shareholders are required to obtain Digital Signature.-SANA

PTI office raided, flags seized

PTI office raided, flags seized

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Police on Friday raided on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Secretariat and seized thousands of sticks and other equipments. Islamabad police stated that PTI workers indented to sue these sticks during long march to derail peace of the city.

Responding on the police’s statement, PTI, Islamabad Chapter Vice President Ali Awan told Pakistan Times that the police seized the party’s flags not sticks saying that it was the right of every political party to show its presence by holding flags during any activity.“The police violated Section 144 as it does not allow the police to enter into a house or a party office” he added.

“The policemen theft the office equipments including computers, laptops, tap recorders, sound system and other precious things which they sold in Abpara market. This shows that they are not policemen rather rubbers”, he accused.

He condemned the police attitude and termed its statement nothing else but a lie as pictures of the flags also published in the news papers. Entrepreneurship Development

Entrepreneurship Development

“Entrepreneurship – Is it merely the assumption of risk and responsibility in designing and implementing a business strategy or much more? It is actually incredible force and Engine of growth”

Entrepreneurs—people within communities who organize, manage, and measure the risks of a business or enterprise—are essential to building the economies of urban and rural areas across the country. Rural areas conventionally lost their young people to big cities with more career opportunities. Eventually, the more businesses will create the more jobs, the more jobs, the better the economy, the better the economy, that outcome the better our life style.

We cannot deny the role of Young Entrepreneurs in building the improved economy. Young Entrepreneurs often try to bring new business ideas those are based on New Business Models and Emerging Technologies. However, Conventional entrepreneurs never try to become a pioneer in these markets. In fact, they try to follow other businesses and industry leaders to reduce the level of risk. I agree with them up to some extent, but the adoption of business strategy in limits is not always healthier for significant business growth.

Moreover, SHELL—a leading MNC in the Petroleum marketing sector has its Corporate Social Responsibility program, which focuses on spreading Entrepreneurship among youngsters. This vibrant program has title name “LiveWire” Globally, and in Pakistan “Shell Tameer”.

It primarily appreciates Young Entrepreneurs with eye-catching prize; 1000cc Car, Motor Bike, Lap Tops, and much more and also offers mentoring through Business Leaders and Business Experts. Shell arranges Shell Tameer Award each year; in which they receive profiles of Successful Young Entrepreneurs across the country. They mostly prefer those Entrepreneurs, who have some unique and unconventional kind of business in limited resources. For instance, they nominated their top prize to Taj Traders— a new Young Entrepreneur, who has Bangle making small unit in Hyderabad, along with it, he is exporting to USA, UK, and UAE, and contributing in country’s economy.

In addition to The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a leading Non Profit Entrepreneurship Fostering Body, Which is based on Silicon Valley, USA, is principally focuses on spreading the Entrepreneurship globally. TiE was founded in 1992 in Silicon Valley by a group of successful entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and senior professionals with roots in the Indus region. There are currently more than 12,000 members and over 1,800 charter members in 49 chapters across 11 countries. TiE’s mission is to foster entrepreneurship globally through mentoring, networking, and education. Dedicated to the virtuous cycle of wealth creation and giving back to the community, TiE’s focus is on generating and nurturing our next generation of entrepreneurs. TiE has created wealth & helped boost the economies of geographies in which it operates – it is estimated that over $200 billion of wealth creation has resulted from varied TiE initiatives. Besides its flagship event, TiECon – the largest professional conference for entrepreneurs, TiE now has a wide range of programs including Special Interest Groups (SIGs), TiE Institute, Deal Flow Meetings, TiE Young Entrepreneurs, and, most recently, TiE Women’s Forum and CEO Forum.

TiE have three chapters in Pakistan; Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. They are really very helpful for Young Entrepreneurs in case of Business Plan Competitions, Networking forums, Start Ups, Mentor-ships, Entrepreneurial summits, and much more. All these locals’ chapters are operating by renowned Entrepreneurs of the country.

What I believe is that Entrepreneurship is an incredible force. It is the engine of growth, jobs and opportunity and deserves to be celebrated. One Visionary Entrepreneur can change this World, for instance, Bill Gates, and some conventional entrepreneur with broad vision has spirit to achieve their Goals, I cannot forget to put name of the great entrepreneur from the Indus Region, yes off course, The great Late Dhirubhai Ambani, a founder of Reliance Group, who created enough wealth, and entered in Richest People List, It cannot be created in ordinary way in short span of time.

Moreover, I would like to draw your kind attention to shocking fact that there is no claimed Billionaire in term of Dollars in Pakistan according to Forbes Richest List. But our neighboring; India have four Billionaires in the list of Top Ten Richest People in the World. Pakistan’s major population comprises of Youth, and Young people should stand up, and Work on Entrepreneurship, which will surely create jobs, but also make significant contribution to the economy. We should keep the example of founders of Multi Billion Dollars Corporations; You Tube, Face Book, Google Inc., and numerous others; they are in the list of Young Billionaire due to their strong vision, and commitment. What they did, they turned the people’s problem into profitable solution. We youth as future of Pakistan cannot do? We people are as much talented and passionate than rest of the world. What is actually required? Is it Funds, Extraordinary Ideas, Management, or what else? I believe all the components are essential to take a successful start up.

I would like to conclude that World is Open to us, so Mentors, who are Successful Entrepreneurs in their respective field should guide Young Entrepreneurs, and teach skill of taking measurable risk with its implementation. Venture Capitalist should promote concept of Venture Funds in Major Cities, as well small cities of Pakistan, because, there is unmatchable potential in our youth from Middle class background. In this regard, TiE Local chapters, and Universities should take bold steps towards Fostering Entrepreneurship in the region. This can lead them into renowned producers of Entrepreneurs in the World.

Your friends can not be invisible anymore-Find How

Your friends can not be invisible anymore-Find How

Youngsters and lovebirds are generally seen to chat with unknown peoples. Sometimes they become so close that it seems to live without them a little bit impossible. Now imagine a case when a first person doesn’t want to talk to second person. The first person remains invisible in messenger window. However the second person thinks he or she is offline. But dear friends don’t worry in this blog I am going to tell you youngsters how to catch some one if he or she is invisible or really offline.

Here I will demonstrate two messengers: Gtalk and Yahoo Messenger.

Gtalk:

1. Select the person whom u doubt to be invisible.
2. Open the chat window. (See the screen Shot)

pic-1

3.Now find the drop down at the extreme right of the window. Use the drop down and check the option “Go off the Record”.
pic-2

4. Now the message comes in the Chat window as seen in Screen Shot.

pic-3

5. Now send a message. If he or she is really offline a message appears: xyz@gmail.com is offline and can’t receive messages right now.

pic-4

6. If he or she is invisible you will not receive this message.

Explanation:
Point 1: When a chat is set off the record, it will no longer get stored in your Gmail account.
Point 2: When you send a chat message to offline or invisible user, it gets delivered by default. At receiving end if user is online, a chat screen pops up showing him your message.
If he/she is offline, your chat message will go to inbox as a mail.

Now if you put together above points then you will notice that, when you set chat off the record it can’t be delivered to inbox as mail, so it will be delivered only if user is online (no matter if he/she is invisible).

How to know if somebody has blocked you in GTALK:

For this you need to install Pidgin.

Steps to Follow:

1. Download Pidgin free from Internet and install the same.
2. Next open it up.
3. Go to Buddies->Show->Offline Buddies.
4. Now select the person you doubt.
5. Right Click on the name and select Get Info.
6. If he or she has blocked you, you will never see the Information details. Else Details are available. Try it out!!!!

Easy right!!! So go ahead and chase your love.

Yahoo Messenger:

There are really lots of ways to see this. Here I will state two ways:

1. It is really very simple. Go to the link and enter the ID you want to see. Just enter the ID and you will see whether he or she is offline or invisible.
2. Else download Buddy Spy. It is free of cost. You can download it from net.

    1. In Buddy Spy first go to Configure section. Give your ID and password. Don’t touch the connection settings. Let it be default settings.
    2. Now go to the Buddy Spy section. Give the ID you doubt to be invisible and give a cool search. Here the advantage is that it shows details of the buddy like Status, Chat Room, Webcam details, Primary ID etc.

I am little researching on MSN as well as Facebook. By the way if any one knows the trick get back to me!!! Dear don’t give the advice MSNSpyMonitor; I don’t like that…because it is not free!!!! However for MSN I can suggest you a site that shows the real status of the person as well as if you are blocked. Try it buddy here it goes:

Zaibatsu should be reinstated on Digg

Few weeks back i came across with Zaibatsu to get his opinion about social media for my article; he was among top 10 diggers at that time. For the reason he was among top diggers i presumed he might have been rude or impolite; but to my surprise he was very friendly and helping. Even he offered me to get assistance from MrBabyMan for my article. While being in social media we only can know people by their conversations online, approaches towards requests and dealings in terms of help and favors; so i established a perception about him as a man who can go out of the way to help others. My encounter with him was purely professional though i started deeming him as “my good friend and mentor”.

Yesterday we were talking to each other regarding several things including the Islamabad blasts and he was like “oh! There is not much I can do in my diminished capacity on digg, but that should change in the next few days…. I’ll try and get the word out”

When he got to know about the Czech Ambassador Ivo Zdarek died in Islamabad Blast he said “damn do I have to contact my people in the well U.S. Govt to find out what the real story is?, now I’m trying to tone down the response from the U.S. in a major crisis”

He told me his father died of cancer last year and his mother has Alzheimer and a bad heart; he always tries to please her. At that time I could never have thought he would be banned from digg.

Regarding his ban on digg he contacted Digg support and wrote them “I had linked directly to the pictures of the digg user on her site. However the site owner apparently redirected the site to a spam site after my initial post.”

In his other mail On Sep 19, 2008, at 11:59 AM, R.J. Saddler( Zaibatsu)wrote:

Guys, hey I didn’t know that a picture of a female digger was against the TOS. I didn’t even know that she was selling something on the site. I’ve submitted over 3000 – 4000 articles and I’ve been on Digg since month 1. I definitely didn’t try and promote a site to sell a product. I really have tried to be a good digger.

Is there anyway that you could reinstate my account?

Reg
________________________________________________________
His request was declined by Digg Support saying

Hello R.J.,

Thanks for contacting us at Digg.com. At this time, we are unable to remove the ban on your account.

–Digg Support
__________________________________________________________

I feel bad for him and few thing that go in his favour are:
1. He was such an active and popular digger that out of 3000 – 4000 submissions; a full 1,196 have gone popular making total 40%.
2. He never have deliberately violated the TOS of digg in entire four years.
3. He has explained his position in his email to Digg support too.
4. He is a man with wish to bring change He told me while talking about digg:

“I started with digg … a member from month 1, it was fun, and it still is. I enjoy getting stories that I care about to the masses. It’s so much hard then just a year ago due to digg and other sites changing the algo. But for every cute bunny story, I want to get 1 out about the environment, or politics. Just the stuff I care about. Don’t get me wrong I have to feed the masses, but what makes it for me is the fact that I can make a difference. A change for good”

5. He has been not only a loyal digg user for four years but a mentor for many a user and emerged as an devoted promoter of the site.

6. Digg is just a site; i am sure he has much strength to start his own social media Company as He claimed that,

“I’ll have the largest social media market company on the planet in 1 year”

7. I have solid grounds to say that group can change things a group that has power to influence the mind in making and breaking a story as Reg Saddler told me

We’re a groups of people can influence the media more than a 3 minute blurb on CNN It’s the wisdom of the informed masses. The power of the masses to move a concept, stories or even a cute picture forward so a group of people can enjoy, comment or talk action for good or bad on a topic. The old media just doesn’t get it

However as Digg CEO Jay Adelson “Digg revolt” that took place last night? It wasn’t really a revolt, he says. Several of the top diggers — including Andrew “MrBabyMan” Sorcini, Muhammad “msaleem” Saleem and Reg “Zaibatsu” Saddler, held an emergency chat/podcast to discuss their response to a recent change in the Digg algorithm which made it more difficult for veteran Diggers to get their submissions on the front page. After nearly a couple hours of debate, it was decided that they would boycott the site. They backed down from the plan, though, when Digg founder Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson showed up and talked them down from it.

“Let’s be realistic about what happened yesterday,” Adelson says. “It wasn’t a revolt. To me, a revolt is when a statistically significant group of people cause a disruption. These guys are significant to me personally, but this wasn’t a revolt. I hope that the next time a small group of users voice their concerns, it’s not represented as a ‘mass movement’ or a ‘revolt.’”

If this groups will seriously revolt i am sure he can be unbanned and reinstated. Despite the fact that he would have become the lead story of American press; i would want raise my little voice for him.

Social Media Mavens consider Social Media as…

Communication is redefining itself through new modes of technology where Social Media or Social networking or Web 2.0 is an nontraditional tool to communicate with the people of same interests, preferences, variations and tastes across the globe via internet. It is a divergent phenomenon and has different forms that include Internet forums, message boards, weblogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures and video. Technologies include: blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, crowd sourcing, and voice over IP, to name a few. Examples of social media applications are Google Groups Wikipedia, MySpace , Facebook, Last.fm(personal music) , YouTube (video sharing), Second Life (virtual reality), Flickr (photo sharing), Twitter (social networking and microblogging) and other microblogs such as Jaiku and Pownce. Many of these social media services can be integrated via social network aggregation platforms like Mybloglog and Plaxo. There are other giants including StumbleUpon and Digg that integrate user feedback, commentary and work to connect users with each other and other applications and visitors from around the world.

Unlike all other Traditional Media including Newspapers, Televisions, Magazines, Books and Radio; Social Media is managed and controlled by the common people who are either Information Hunters or involve in social media for financial benefits. SM is a user-oriented approach, it’s crucial to identify and classify these users in accordance with their potential and the market segment they hold. Heaviest aspect of social media is; people are becoming comfortable with social usage of this media. According to the Consumer Internet Barometer produced by the Conference Board and TNS, “Social-interaction platforms, such as top-ranked MySpace and Facebook, have grown dramatically in recent years, with one out of every four people online now visiting social-networking sites.” Bill Martens 43 Year old Novelist and minor league football player who has lived in several countries, speaks seven languages, and currently resides in Japan says “Social Networking allows easy communication for those who might not otherwise communicate in the real world. My friend is deaf and she uses it exclusively for that purpose. It also allows people in the same area to make contact where they might not even know each other exists”, he added that as for the financial benefits, it does allow people to spread the word about web sites for which one is web master. For sites that are advertising driven, social media is a bonus to earn. Bill Marten has marked these sites too addictive and time consuming that few people tend to spend way too much time on it. According to him few people also begin to have all their relationships in the online world and completely forget about the external world, According to him it is a dilemma that social media users are becoming more social online and less social offline.

Very interestingly these extremely easy to join networks keeps the teenagers busy, who lake patience to fill up long complicated forms. They can join just by pushing a button “Add as friend” to expand their network. On these networks identity becomes more important than the person himself, social media marketers use to refer each other either by user names or avatars. This expanding circle helps them in becoming more and more popular within these networks, more the user is popular more his or her submissions are valued. A very popular user on Digg Mr.BabyMan has gained a gigantic fan bank whereas his opponents use to mark him as an exploiter and using his status.

Social media gurus have criticized social media as well and this criticism does hold justification, i.e. quantitative use destroying the quality of content. This is a serious issue and probably a hurdle on the way towards success of SM as well. No doubt these sites have become a major tool not only to interact but to accumulate the information in a single place. A Massive database is available for users and that is for free where content and context are the ruling forces of Internet Marketing. But a criticism is making it place about the weak content. Replying to this criticism, another school of thought is of the opinion that quality still finds its way because the users are people, not bots, and content if not providing what users are looking for or is in old hat, will not be able to gimmick any attention even if made very much popular artificially.

For Florin Nedelcu 23 year’s old, male from Bucharest, Romania says, ”Social Media is quickly redefining the way humans interact with each other online. Whether it is through blogs or social networks, people have easier access to the content they are interested in and can interact with individuals that share their interests. He commented on the negative aspect of social media as “the negative aspect of social media is marketing and branding but lately it becomes quite frustrating to notice social networks flooded with weak content promoted so traffic can be driven to obscure websites that pay for the attention.” While Joe Smith 28 year old male from CA, USA has entirely different opinion about the quality content and he takes the social media as source of socializing he says “Compare social media with grade A, B or even wrong movies these have audience though; similarly social media produces varied type of content; and end user defines the nature of the content”, according to him lots of people from South Asia; of course online; approach social media indifferently. He made another point about the success of these networks saying,”Social Media is very prosper therefore millions of people are joining it every years and companies are investing in the startups”. I would deem it wise to agree because big companies have their eyes on these networks and are being bought for enormous amounts of money; reason is popularity of these sites.

Recently, Bebo, A social networking site, second only to MySpace and Facebook was bought by AOL for $856 million. Several online corporate companies have already realized the huge potential of social networks and started using them in their own interests. Maki from Toronto a top digger has suggested in this regard that big businesses are trying to find a way into a specific target market and since social websites come with an engaged and built-in audience, it makes sense for them to acquire them. He added, “The problem is finding a way to monetize them without spoiling the social experience, and I think if this goes on and power is taken away from the users, social media just won’t be social any more”.

Social Media, being an emerging concept is still undiscovered for most of the individuals associated with web business and having most of the aspects unexplored, the sustainability of SM is still a question mark. Talking with reference to Pakistan social Media is still a concept unknown to millions. A very small number has acquaintance with true soul of social media. While comparing Pakistan with its neighboring countries in Asian Continent e.g. India, Japan, China and Sri Lanka; these networks are almost run by the people from these countries. Hasan Saleem 24 years old Search Engine Optimizer from Pakistan has defined social media as man managed networks that include all those websites where people post, comment, criticize, appraise news, products and services. For him social Media is source to generate huge traffic, sales, exposure, worldwide audience. While he thinks Negative criticism on content and services is unproductive aspect. He presumes a bright future for social news as a medium that will persist indefinitely rather will grow. He thinks Pakistan needs to pay attention towards this emerging industry.

Millions of people are joining these networks every year and these have become the talk of time. Every other Article in Newsweek, The Times or Fortune is about these networks. While asking people about their specific goals to be on these social media, a varied range of views were observed e.g. Babychen Methew an entrepreneur Journalist from India and top stumbler revealed why he was in social media? “I am an information addict. And I have a website which once in a while, gets great traffic from the main social news sites such as Digg, Reddit or StumbleUpon. These two things work in a complementary manner for me. I believe that it might be possible to become successful in social media even if you are not an information addict, but I have not seen many examples of that yet.” For him to be successful on these networks Active participation (submission and voting on good content) and networking are the crucial components of social media success.

A total sum of Social media and Internet Marketing has possible for web base business to market themselves socially through these networks. Ahmed Soba a 25 year-old guy from Maldives has been among top diggers comments on how social media is useful financially other than making contacts all around the world “Social media is a technology on the internet that allows people to share content and experience with each other online use. It can be used for promotion of websites through social media channels (Digg, Reddit and SutmbleUpon). Promotion on these networks can get massive amounts of traffic for web sites. You can get better searching engine ranking because there is permanent back links from trusted domains and some times online users also blogs it. One of the key advantages of these networks is of being free. No need to pay thousand of dollars to buy many links rather Per Pay Click rewards are enormous”.

People wonder how these sites earn when they provide everything for free to millions of people. Advertising! They bring in revenues by running advertising. These sites are great for advertisers as they can reach millions of people. These networking sites have come up with a targeted ad solution where the advertiser reaches people going by the user profiles and interests. This is what makes social networking sites a haven for advertisers too. If you have a product on “music” you wish to promote, all you need to do is to join one of these social networking sites and promote it to music lovers. Imagine the number of targeted visitors to your website. Another twist to the social networking sites is the “social media” sites, where people can share news, personal experiences, reviews and favorite websites with other people. Digg, which is a social news site, allows people to select interesting news or blog posts. When a news item or blog post is “dugg,” by other users, it gets prominence in terms of placement on the site. It has helped in homogenizing the planet, mixing each other. Contextualizing the phenomenon of globalization; it is reasonable to assume that the internet will be home to more than socialization and information – it will be the home of true artificial intelligence.

Capn_caveman thinks the pros are that social media often finds some more obscure (but interesting) content that is not always picked up by the major news networks…. For him one of the cons is that there is a tendency to have a herd mentality on breaking news stories where people follow each other blindly. According to him the herd mentality has been widely discussed as a possible problem with social news sites in general. Jason Lankow a 27 years old male from California says, “herd mentality isn’t always inherently bad…we do it to stay informed and belong, and sometimes this can be good if we herd around a good idea and act on it (i.e. the popularity of solar energy articles on digg).

Jason Lankow expresses as “Social media gives people the chance to grow their existing network of friends and collectively shape the content of the site and determine what news is. This can be good when quality content is discovered and promoted and bad when poor content is gamed and becomes front page news”. He added that he loves meeting people from around the world and the voting process has made reading the news of the day so much interesting, and has helped him to hold his own content to a higher standard. According to him “everyone seems to think that the future of social media is to create meaning and structure across multiple sites, but so far, most of the aggregators have furthered what people perceive as the main problem – it is one more site to use and try to maintain an active profile in most cases. But there will be a clear winner or two – maybe Google and Digg! it can be fun too (i.e. rick roll, etc.) when so many people embrace an idea that it spills beyond social media into mainstream media probably people’s biggest complaint is that top users have a herd around them that* blindly vote for the person’s content, but for a person to get to that point they typically have to gain a reputation for quality and maintain it. He added that the same negative aspects of a herd mentality that exist outside of the internet can be present in extreme cases (i.e. religious discrimination, propaganda).”

He elaborated further, “don’t think it is that big of a deal that big companies try to market through social media (i.e. youtube, facebook and myspace)…it is inevitable…businesses will always be trying to get in the mind of the consumer, and it gets harder and harder the more sensational stories must become so one other negative that we see is more blurring of reality like the fake story of the kid who used his dad’s credit cards to buy prostitutes that was posted on money.co.uk or the office worker freak-out video that was made by the director of the movie Wanted the good side to this though, is that we don’t have a top-down feeding of the news to the people where the people have no ability to speak out against a fraudulent story. When the people are misled, the phony is exposed almost immediately but some of these fakers don’t care because they still get the publicity for the fake story upfront, and then even more exposure once they are discovered.

Zaibatsu top digger comments about social media, “It’s a way for people to interact, basically sharing thoughts and ideas publicly.” While talking about cons he said, “The cons are that people just don’t understand what it is, if you remember “multimedia” in the late 80’s and 90’s everyone wanted to be a part of it, but no one got it. That’s what social media is today, I have to say facebook or Myspace to lay out a framework for the convo. And then try and explain the concept behind sites like digg. We’re a groups of people can influence the media more than a 3 minute blurb on CNN It’s the wisdom of the informed masses. The power of the masses to move a concept, stories or even a cute picture forward so a group of people can enjoy, comment or talk action for good or bad on a topic. The old media just doesn’t get it. He said, “I started with digg … a member from month 1, it was fun, and it still is.

While talking about the cons he elaborated’ “It sucks, ask Steve Jobs… you have to make something the herd likes and then they’ll follow… I think he did a forbes or fortune article where he said the same thing. He claimed that, “I’ll have the largest social media market company on the planet in 1 year” About the future of social media sites he said, “the future is twitter, plurk, friend feed and mixx.com new community feature. Where people, companies and individuals can interact in real-time online share and collaborating. http://www.mixx.com/groups

Yes, countries like the U.S. are not informed about Pakistan. They don;t understand the nightlife in Lahore, or that you’re not all part of the terrorist fringe. I get it, but the U.S. and Euro population doesn’t. Just getting the word out through blogging, media that Pakistan has loving caring people jsut like we do. It’s the sad truth, but Americans have a hard time dealing with Americans
