Supreme Court bring hope, confidence to traumatized masses
Islamabad: The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said that Supreme Court has infused confidence and hope in the shaken masses by ordering a probe against Director General Federal Investigations Agency (FIA) Waseem Ahmed for allegedly providing protection to an accused in NICL scandal case,. The development will help restore trust in the system among ordinary masses; majority believe judiciary can bring fundamental changes aimed at positive outcome, it said.
The influential DG FIA should be removed from the office making him incapable to influence investigations. This will also minimize chances of destruction of critical evidence, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW. Supreme Court can consider barring him from traveling abroad and review notification of extension in service , he said.
The Apex court can order a thorough probe into all the orders issued by Wasim while serving as DG FIA, he added. Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that masses should know that why he was appointed as DG FIA three month before his retirement and on what conditions he was awarded extension in service. Motives of his political masters should be brought to public eye.
Allegations of filing inquiries into multi-billion rupees frauds, patronizing NAB tainted offices, cornering honest and harboring national criminals need detailed probed, he said. Government should not see the recent development as an insult and abstain from making it an issue of ego, he said. A three-member bench of the apex court, comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, was hearing a suo motu case against the alleged corruption of over Rs5 billion in the NICL affairs.
The apex court was informed on Monday that an arrested accused of Rs5 billion corruption scam in the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) had told the investigators that he had given Rs220 million to Moonis Elahi, the son of former Punjab chief minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi, from the plundered money
He said that NAB seems to have shelved inquiry into Rs 6 billion arms purchase scam in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province in which over 30 police officers and politicians are said to be involved. This serious issue should not go unnoticed, he demanded. -Pakistan Economy Watch
