Social Disnetworking Site:Facebook

Submitted by Ambarish Pandey on December 17, 2010 – 3:20 pmNo Comment

Why we join a Social Networking Site like Orkut or Facebook? Only to get in touch with old pals? Then why these and particularly Facebook calls itself a Social Networking site? Why there is an option to select “Networking” in “Looking For” section. Networking can be done in many ways, either we can add some old people we know already or some other random people we want to get in touch with, the reason may be professional networking or just for the sake of making new friends.

Recently Facebook has started monitoring that how many friend requests you are sending and how many are getting no answers or ignored. Based on this statistics, Facebook had started to block its users for not sending friend request to the peoples, especially to the people who are not in any common friends list or out of network or even having one to four common friends. A pop up stating:

“Do you know this user personally? To prevent misuse of Facebook, this request cannot be sent. To learn more, please visit the Help Center. If you believe you’re seeing this message in error, you can report the problem” appears.

Now imagine a situation, suddenly you have found your old school teacher in Facebook, and you don’t have any common friends! You are trying hard to add him/her, but not able to do so, because of Facebook’s extra intelligence! Irritating huh!

In official Facebook page in Facebook itself (http://www.facebook.com/facebook) it says

“Giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” By the sentence “make the world more open and connected”, is it not Facebook contradicting his own view by not allowing sending friend requests to strangers!

Day by day Facebook is gaining popularity, but if it contradicts with the basic definition of social networking site, then people will surely start abhorring it near future. What’s the harm if we send a friend request to unknown people? No Harm possibly. If he or she doesn’t want to communicate then there is always an Ignore button available. But if an unknown person accepts a friend request from an unknown person then who knows, it can be a pair of Laurel-Hardy, the great comedian pair of century, who, once didn’t knew each other and now their graves lie side by side. Who knows, may be a new series of love story can start, I know a couple who met at Facebook and got married. Though they are thankful to Facebook, but they are dead against for this new bogus policy.
