Understanding Pakistan’s Problems

Mon, Apr 13, 2009

Opinion, Pak Affairs

Presently Pakistan is passing through a series of chronic and painful problems include political, socioeconomic, energy crises, security, uncertainty in Balochistan, day to day suicide bombing, foreign Drones attacks and worst situation of law and order in FATA and NWFP. These all are brain blasting and heart pinching for all true Pakistanis.

Thanks to President Asif Ali Zardari who with great wisdom solved the issue of judiciary without harming and insulting sitting Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar; a good sign for Pakistan that tragedies of insulting judiciary were not repeated in the history of Pakistan.

However existence of extremists and terrorists at the Pakistani soils is not only dangerous for Pakistan but also posing threat for global peace. Not only Pakistani government but also people at large living in conflicted areas are passing through great trouble. The ongoing sectarian clashes and blood bath in around the country are adding problems to Pakistan. So far innocent people in thousands are being killed and kidnapped in D.I Khan and there is a silent war against a particular sect. In most areas of NWFP the writ of the government is in the hands of local militants. Situation in Kurram Agency because of so called sectarian clashes is getting worst day by day. The area recently had great disaster of sectarian clashes in which thousands of innocent lives have been lost and a great destruction to infrastructure.

President is keen to the rehabilitation of people of FATA but the situation in Parachinar is as it was. Here the families who had received casualties are neither financed nor asked about their loss even. Pakistan Peoples Party nominee for National Assembly from Kurram Agency Parachinar Dr. Riaz Hussein Shah tells that he is facing great embarrassment before the families of all those victims who had been killed with him in PPP’s election campaign rally on Feb 17, 2008 when a suicide bomb exploded and more than 70 innocent people killed and near 200 got serious injuries. The responsibility lay on the shoulders of Chairman and General Secretary of PPP that they should ask their party martyrs, their orphans in order to heal their wounds.

They all were together there for the cause of democracy and for the victory of their party and gave their lives. President is appealed that he should ask the families of Parachinar’s PPP martyrs and sanction funds for their rehabilitation. People of Parachinar either students in different universities and colleges or employees in different governmental and non governmental departments throughout the country; unfortunately have not seen their families from last two years due to the blockade of main Peshawar to Parachinar road by inhuman Tlibans. The road is blockade for the people of Parachinar from last two years and the people in emergency are reaching Parachinar through very dangerous route from Afghanistan.

The people in Parachinar are totally disconnected from rest of the country both through media and roads. Hospitals are lacking medicine and daily using food stuff is touching sky in prices. People there are passing through the bitter days of starvation and fasting. I am hurt while listening that number of children die there due to lack of primarily used medicine.

Opening of road on urgent bases is impossible due to security problems but the government must sanction the PIA trips on weekly bases to Parachinar as had done by Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto when she was the prime minister of Parachinar. Not sanctioning PIA flights to Parachinar is not only the insult of Benazir Bhuto’s wish for the people of Parachinar as well insult of there people whose patient children and women are traveling through dangerous way of Afghanistan.

Today Pakistan is surrounded by a number of socio-economic political and security problems which have engendered into a great national disaster. Presently as the Government is responsible to exert all efforts in positive directions for the survival of country the same responsibility comes to opposition. Opposition instead of to play their politics on the issues should look into the security and multi problems of the country.

Government did well by applying Justice System conditionally in Swat on the desire of masses living there. It will help bringing peace there but government must not ignore the reality how can all those elements work for justice who have tortured, killed, kidnapped and displaced the people of Swat.

We must not provide safe heavens to all those who are militants of warfare and involved in inhuman activities. Guilty must be punished according the true teachings of Islam and Pakistani law. Those who are involved in the weakening of country and are contributing to terrorism must not be dealt with soft hands. Islam does not forbid anyone for bloodbath.

In Islam the killing of one human equals the killing of whole humanity. Peace is highly valued by Allah and His Prophet (p.b.u.h). Government must keep in view the consequences; country will receive after years because of this ongoing unrest going around the country. ANP’s deviation from its motive as the people of NWFP are observing can take it away from political harmony which they had been received in election both at national as well as provincial.

Without long and strategic of political, economical, traditional, social bases bringing peace to FATA and Swat is impossible. Mr. President Asif Ali Zardari has said well that there are great faults with our system at grass root level without their eruption from roots peace, economical and political stability in Pakistan is a dream. In his first speech as Chairman PPP he has claimed this system responsible for the assassination of his party leader and promised that he would avenge the death of his leader by brining changes to the system.

I would like to say that it is very high time for president brought all those changes for which he has desired. Why all political parties of Pakistan especially PML-N can’t come at one table both in centre and in Punjab for the well being of country and people? Government has to take some serious decision for the elimination of terrorism and extremism and without national integrity these everything is impossible.

Today the most of the areas of NWFP and FATA as a whole are out of the writ of the government which is alarming. Control over own people by force is not a control in real senses. One can’t rule over an area through force unless we accept their will and respect their wishes in the circle of humanity and country’s laws. Ad hoc approaches toward the solutions of problems spoil the issues even more.

Toward FATA and NWFP’s solution we need a compact set of applications and it is need of hour to apply over there all possible solutions. People living there are fed up of ongoing clashes, killing, kidnapping, devastation and bombardments. They are going toward a great tribal war which will push the country great troubles and can hence become cause of disintegration (God forbid). Alone Zardari and ruling government can’t enable Pakistan to get rid of all these problems till all political parties do not help the government above vested and political interests.
Live Long Pakistan.

I can empathise with you Toori!

heart felt but still i feel you have raised Asif Ali Zardari a little more then required..

  2. Noreen Gill Says:

FATA is burning issue yet ignored totally..

I dont see any harm in arranging flights of PIA to PARACHINAR..

what if Pakistani government respects the wills of people..

Are we really on the edge of a scene where we wold see Pakistan’s ship is sinking?

  3. Noreen Gill Says:

I want to be optimistic.. always

  4. Hasnain Naqvi Says:

Some people thinks that the solution to the current situation in Swat lies in talks and discussions rather than fighting against these brutal militants in Swat. But from the time of Musharraf to date there have been atleast four peace talks with these terrorist groups and at the end government accept to implement the so called Nizam-e-Adal or Shriah in Swat but inspite of all these efforts from government,in return, what these millitants do! more attacks, suicide bombings on Imam Bargah, targetting police headquarters, attack on Srilankan team and killed many innocent people. So how one can accept that these inhuman terrorist Taliban are able to implement any Shariah?

Secondly, Parachanaar and DI Khan are burning regularly but no one is feeling the pain of oppressed ones. Especially in the case of Parachanaar concerned authorities are silent and unfortunately media is not raising voice against the brutal activities of talibaan on the oppressed people of Parachanaar. It is the duty of media to bring the facts in front of the Pakistani nation about the Parachanaar and raise the voice to solve the critical situation there.

  5. ss Says:

I 100% agree with the writer, people of Parachinar are suffering and we are not doing anything. So far nothing concrete has been done by the local or federal govt. we all should pressurize govt. in a peaceful manner. At this point of time govt. is paying heed to only violent people that is why Taliban are being paid heavily for making deals and the innocent people are forced to live without the basic necessities.

  6. ahsan Says:

ITS FUNNY THAT CRIMINAL PEOPLE ARE GIVEN THE RIGHT TO ENFORCE THEIR OWN “INVENTED” ISLAM THROUGH GUN. THEY ARE WORKING ON AGENDA TO FINISH PAKISTAN.

PEOPLE OF PARACHINAR AND DI KHAN MUST RECEIVE COMPENSATION AND SECURITY AGAINST BRUTAL, INHUMAN, SAVAGE TALIBNAS

ALLAH SAVE ISALM AND PAKISTAN FROM THESE ZIONIST AGENTS

I am thankful to U Omer sb for your support..surely its our national problem because Parachinar and other Tribal areas are parts of Pakistan. If any part of Pakistan is receiving wound surely the whole body feel the pain. So far you comments about President are concerned I would like to say that WHAT FATA IS HAVING IN LITTLE TODAY ARE BECAUSE OF PPP. I am not writting this in any Political affliation while I am seeing ground realities there. For this I wnat to paste few sentences from my other article for your reading please…I respect president because he has great concern over FATA issue.. atleast he is in direct touch with our people and he is working on issues.. Let we support our Govt That we can get rid of all problem

    Coming to Parachinar’s rescue

PAKISTAN has failed in protecting Frontier and tribal areas. Taking a cursory look of the overall condition of the Frontier and Fata areas, it seems that Pakistan in more than 50 years has failed to ensure security, economic development, quality educational institutions, employment and an industrial network in Fata and the NWFP. The conditions of Fata and the NWFP are getting worse day by day and life of the common man is just hell there.

Parachinar, considered the Switzerland of Pakistan. The educational institutions are closed there and the upcoming matriculation examinations will not be held this year due to unrest in the area.

Basic daily food requirements are not available. The main Thal-Peshawar Road which leads to Parachinar has remained closed for the last three months. When opened for one day, the local militants attack and freely kill and behead the passengers. From the last one year till now, more than 100 innocent people have lost their lives on this road at the hands of terrorists.

The main problem is that Parachinar is the only area in Fata where Shia Muslims live. It is surrounded by militants who either directly or indirectly are involved in militant activities. There is no law and order and the area does not seem to be part of Pakistan. One can easily say that the Pakistan government has failed to protect its frontiers and could not bring Fata in the mainstream of the country.

    Z. A. Bhutto in his speech at Parachinar had praised the beauty, talent and fertile lands of Parachinar and promised: “I will make Parachinar a piece of Heaven”.

Afterwards, the Zia regime give the region a culture of war and terror and sectarianism. He pushed this beautiful area through ongoing sectarian clashes. From the time of Zia’s regime till now, thousands of people from both sides have lost their lives, many becoming homeless and disabled.

Such black days ended when the golden days of Benazir Bhutto came. She as prime minister visited Parachinar, had women colleges opened and promised that she would improve the living standard of the people of this area. The unemployed were given jobs, roads were paved and extended, and a broadcasting station was opened and many more things were done.

Over three months ago, when sectarian clashes began in Parachinar again, I sent a comprehensive report on Parachinar to Ms Bhutto through Sherry Rehman and Farzana Raja. She personally showed great grief and promised that after coming to power she would change the condition of Parachinar.

Today Parachinar is burning: daily bodies of more than five beheaded persons reach Parachinar. The situation of Parachinar is getting worse day by day and so is the life of all people living there. It’s a matter of great sorrow and shock that Pakistan, in spite of bringing Fata into the mainstream of the country, has been pushed into fighting a continuous war and facing terror.

The new prime minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, and the PPP co-chairmam, Asif Ali Zardari, are requested to help us as the last government could not heal our wounds. Z. A. Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto always wanted Parachinar to be a piece of heaven while now it is piece of hell.

    RIAZ ALI TOORI
    Malana village, Parachinar
It was written last year…. but sad situation is as it was…. just think…

  8. Kashan Says:

The writer has raised very right concern about the people of parachinar and DI Khan. In DI khan people are being forced to leave that area due to different sect from Taliban affiliated people. It is a crime according to Pakistan’s national law and basic humane rights that come under every religion as these are in Islam.

I think, Government must identify clearly all the elements that are making disturbances in our country due to vested intersts. This can only be done if our institutions start working without any affiliations and personal interests.

Being a true Pakistani and a Muslim we must pay heed to all issues and all people of Pakistan. Ignoring any issue would lead to more disturbances.

  9. jam kausar Says:

i am more than 100% agree with the writer, Riaz Ali Toori, opinion. who has informed us the real picture of Parachanar. the need of time is to resolve all the problems concerning the peoples of Parachanar in order to enhance their life standards and put the country on the path of progress as this area produces highly competent and patriotic peoples.

  10. Rehan Says:

Riaz has opened a debate that i have not seen in an newspaper of Pakistan.. or an news channel has highlighted this issue..

I pray to Allah that our rulers should pay attention to every problem of Pakistan to solve i..

  11. Rani Says:

    Riaz!

I dont know but Zaradari.. is not that good anyways..
today problem is sympathy with the people of Parachinar and the brutalities waged by the ruthless Talibans..

I dont know what type os Muslims they are..

Islam is peaceful religion and never promotes this type of things.. i know several lakh people living there and deprived of basic life necessities

  12. Omer Azam Says:

When a part of body bleeds whole body feels he pain.. FATA and rest of the tribal areas from PATA etc are the part of Pakistan; regardless of the issues; tha they dont pay electricty bills and keep their people uneducated etc etc they are the same people as we are..

    Riaz!

Benazir Bhutto and Z.A. Bhutto were visionary leaders to make Pakistan literally a “heaven on Earth” therefore they faced the music for their determination..

  13. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

    Daer Omar,
We are providing you shelter against a long frontier without any payement..If we are soldiers without pay how cant use electricity without BILLS Lol…Kidding
I know being citizens of this country we must pay bills but interesting as there LAW AND RULES are dim and blunt and in worst the same electricity is dim and blunt… Do you know people there use candle to search lighting bulb.. mean it is not of any use….
And You know Throughtout the tribal belt there is not a single industry and no source of employeemnet..really most people there cant pay bills.
But instead of all these they are paying bills because on each suger bag when enter to any Agency Govt 100 t0 200Rs extra charges over per bag… see under FCR how a nice way and method they are using to receive bills.

  14. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

    Rani….
Thanks for your sympethies with people of Parachinar….
    I would like to say…
Zardari is as much good as much he is considered bad ( sorry for using word bad)
Its beauty of democracy that we can express our feelings freely… U have the right.

  15. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

Omar Says. They keep people uneducated…How can U say this?
Dear they are crazy of education… But it is worst reality that neither Pakistan in sixty years could bring FATA in the mainstream of country constitutionally, economically, socially nor they could open any post graduate college for men and women, University or medical college throughout the tribal belt. Now U must be thinking the tribal elders do not allow (as most of our brothers think about tribal people, NO its wrong and lie. I invite you let open colleges schools and university as many as U can in my area I will provide you security, place and all necessary support

  16. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

    Dear Rehan,
Our media both print and electronic work sincerely 99% of our problems can we solve but sad…. We are use our all powers for blackmailing and vested interests.

  17. Peaceful Soul Says:

For the first time the issue has been raised and a real debate has satarted on a burnin issue, though its way too late but better late then never. All My Sympathies for the People of not only Parachinaar but for the whole region that has been sufferring for years now with this taliban and anti taliban war on terror phenonmenon. I really applaud the courage and will to survive shown by the people of Parachinaar. Government and the concerned authorities really have failed to fulfill the hopes of people who voted for them but one has to understand that we are under severe threat of disintegration and the need of the hour is our unity. It really is time that PML-N should realize that even they have got to play their positve and due role in the center now. I just hope our leaders get sincere with the nation.

N now as far as this Zardari Thing is Concerned…

Its the Beauty of the Democracy that you can Express your views independently…..

    Agreed

Zardari as himself may not be a good person but as a President what he has done so far is really appriciatable and a lot of people hate him because of their lack of information i guess. Things have been happening and what ever little has been achieved so far by this PPP government is in the lead of Asif Ali Zardari. I personally do not like him, but his works are really worth appriciating. Time will definitely prove that as Claimed by the Daughter of the East, he in the times of need will lead the Ship of Pakistan Successfully.
All the best to him and God Bless Pakistan.

  18. Imran sial Says:

    dear Mr. Toori!
    well done
A good effort to highlight the problems confronting our brothers n sisters in the Frontier.
U seemed little bit biased in your appraoch, when it comes Mr. Zardari. rest of the things r fine.
    best wishes keep it up.

  19. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

Thanks Mr. Imran but what Mr Zardari has done bad for which he be blamed or does not deserve to be appriciated?
Let show patience and wait..I think he is doing best so far for the well being of PAKISTAN.

  20. SAYED GOHAR HUSSAIN Says:

I am agree with the writer RIAZ Ali TOORI he explained the fact and showed real picture of parachinar.I am also from parachinar that the area which before famous for peace and beauty but now like a ghost, we can realise the worst situation of parachinar better than others my salam to all parachinarians that how are they bearing these worst situations for last two years, now there is no any communication,we bring our patients child and families for any treatment to peshawar through dangrous route Afghanistan because there are no mediciens but i am thinking that there will be come peace like before or will be destroyed more………?and i think again that Pakistan is not our country………. because we communicate through Afghanistan………?and why Government is becoming silent again and again? i do not know……. and what does the Government want?i do not know

  21. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

    Dear Gohar,
I am understanding your sentiments and anger but let wait soon there will be peace and happiness because the people of Parachinar are peace loving. We are Pakistani and will be Pakistani forever. These all are because of the mishandling of the Terror issue.
We the people of Parachinar will never forgive Dictator Zia for giving us the disease of Sectarianism and terrorism.
    Let hope for the best.

  22. Haider Ali Says:

    Dear Mr Toori,
I have gone through the artical published in pakistan post. I really appreciate you for ur commendable effort. Its easy to highlight the problems but to offer the solution to those problems is a difficult task, which u have done in apposit manner.
I hope u will keep spreading the light of ur vision making the public aware of its problems and suggesting the govt to take right decisions.

  23. Javed shahzad Says:

i am a keen reader of mr. Toori’s articles and i think this young man is doing an excellent job not only for the people of FATA but also for the whole Pakistani community at large. i was shocked to know about the plight of poor people of Parachinar. it is high time that govt had done something to ameliorate the condition of people of parachinar. he is doing the real jihad for the people of his community; whereas, the govt had done a fig for shiite community of FATA, which is at stake. people there, are facing something which can best be turmed as HOLOCAUST at the hands of brutal Talibans in FATA. what they are doing with people of FATA ESPECIALLY WITH THE TOORI TRIBE is not the teaching of our beloved Prophet [P.B.U.H]. it is golden chance for the president to reciprocate what has been done with the distressed tribe.

  24. David Horvitz Says:

This gentleman has rightly highlighted a real global problem in his article, which is posing threat to the whole world. I’m surprised that people who claim to be the most moderate people on the face of the earth are butchering their own fellow men. Terrorism is not a local problem rather it is a global phenomenon. Pakistan and pakistan community should take a hard stance to crush this menace. Now it is the right time that people should understand the gravity of the problem. nukes are not the real problem but only terrorism. It is good sign that people from tribal areas of pakistan are raising their voice.

    David Horvitz

  25. Riaz Ali Toori Says:

I am feeling great happiness and satisfaction while reading the comments of people on my article. Surely it is giving me high courage. I respect their heartfelt concern over FATA’s issue especially PARACHINAR that is turned into the valley of death by Taliban and militants
I hope Govt will take actions on necessary bases in order to get out the area from ongoing problems.
    Thanks to all.

  26. Salman Ali Says:

Its Good Article. The Problem is International. Our Govt can do nothing alone.

  27. Asif Hussain Says:

This article is an eye opener for our friends who are still supporting taliban. These (taliban)are the people who have turned our country into a worse condition than Iraq and Afghanistan. They have massacared more than two thousand people in Parachinar since 2006 while our government has been lying waiting. It is high time that we start a public campaign against these savage beasts called taliban before they eat up whatever is left of our beloved homeland.

  28. Goshanasheen, Dubai Says:

It won’t be fair to call these acts of terrorism in Parachinar, DIKhan or somewhere else in Pakistan and label them as secretarian clashes.

Its a global conspiracy again our nation and the time has come that our leaders shun their differences and set together, analyze situation and chalk out a strategy to overcome this menace.

Time has come that we request our uninvited guests from arab countries to go back and start their so called jehad there. Similarly our leadership must get a clear time frame from the second group of uninvited guests from around the world. But the question is who will ring this bell.

    Goshanasheen, Dubai, UAE.

  29. Azeem Baig Says:

All of Pakistan is in trouble, and no one is safe, but you are only concerned about the areas dominated by the Shias? I fail to understand the people who look to outside for all decisions, and bring misery to Pakistan get all the praise. The government now is killing and displacing people by the millions and has compromised the sovereignty of the country. No government in the world today allows foreign drone attacks without resistance. No government in the world today kills its own citizens. Pakistani government does. What kind of Islam is in the government leaers that with millions or billions, keep their money outside the country and the citizens starve. Electricity is denied and people cannot drink safe water. This government is capable of taking the country apart and its doing just that with ever incresing zeal. The government is worse than Musharraf’s and people have no confidence in it. The media is also doing its part. The Indian agents are fighting our military and we watch nothing but Indian entertainment. How patriotic our media is !!

  30. moin maqsood Says:

very thanks for telling the problems of pakistan due to bad circumstances in pakistan method of writing was very goog and easy

  31. Riaz Toori Says:

Thanks Dear Moin, Heart burns when see Pakistan burning. The tragedy of Gojra and then Sheikhupura where the extremists went for very inhumane actions made all true and patriot Pakistani worry.
Let pray for the stability and long life of Pakistan. No country can go on the path of progress with extremism and terrorism.
    May ALLAH bless you.
