ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has disqualified Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif for electoral participation. As a result, Shahbaz Sharif is no longer Chief Minister of Punjab. The Supreme Court was requested to set aside the verdict of the Lahore High Court (LHC). The court announced a brief verdict after arguments of Attorney General Sardar Latif Khosa. The court order said that the learned court grants the plea of Syed Khurram Shah against Mian Nawaz Sharif and dismisses all appeals against it.

The appeals also include the petitions of the federation, which were filed in the Supreme Court challenging the judgment of the full bench of Lahore High Court. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justice Muhammad Moosa K Leghari, Justice Syed Sakhi Hussain Bukhari and Justice Sheikh Hakim Ali in a brief verdict also cancelled Punjab Assembly membership of incumbent Chief Minister of Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif.

On June 23, 2008, a full bench of the Lahore High Court disqualified PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif from contesting the election. However, the court had conditionally allowed PML-N President Mian Shahbaz Sharif to hold the office of the chief executive of the province.

Sharif legal and political associates state they do not recognize the authority of the Supreme Court, which is led by a judge appointed by former President Pervez Musharraf after he sacked Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and declared emergency rule.

Fire has ceased in Swat, but the war in Punjab, and perhaps even Islamabad, begins.
Politically, the Sharifs and their faction of the Muslim League (PML-N) are isolated. Their major allies are those outside of parliament, the lawyers, Jamaat-e Islami, and Tehreek-e Insaf.-SANA
