Senate elections to be held on March 4
ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Justice (r) Qazi Muhammad Farooq has announced to hold Senate elections on March 4, 2009. Issuing the schedule on Thursday, the CEC said, public notice by Returning Officers inviting the nomination papers would be issued on February 10 as dates for filing the nomination papers with the Returning Officers, have been set for February 11 to February 13 during the office hours.
Scrutiny of nomination papers by the Returning Officers will be held on February 14-15, during the office hours. The offices of the Returning Officers would remain open on February 15 (Sunday) for the scrutiny process. Date for filing appeals with the Chief Election Commissioner and Member Election Commission, against acceptance and rejection of nomination papers by the Returning Officers has been set for February 17, 2009.
Disposal of appeals by the CEC and the Members Election Commission would take place on February 19-20 as February 21 would be the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Publication of final list of the contesting candidates would be made on February 22 and polling for the vacant Senate seats would be held on March 04 between 0900 hours to 1600 hours.
The Chief Election Commissioner has also notified Punjab Assembly Building Lahore as polling place for the election of Senators from Punjab province. For election of Senators from Sindh Province, Sindh provincial assembly would be polling place and polling for Senate candidates for NWFP province would be held at the provincial assembly building in Peshawar.
For election of Senators from Balochistan province, the provincial assembly building in Quetta would be polling place and the polling for electing Senators from Islamabad Capital Territory and FATA, would be held in Parliament House building in Islamabad. Secretary Election Commission, Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad has stated that names of Returning Officers and Polling Officers for the conduct of Senate election 2009 have already been notified by the CEC. He said the Senate election are being held to fill 50 seats of the Upper House, falling vacant due to retirement of members after completion of their term on March 11, 2009.
While President Asif Ali Zardari being co-Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Thursday formed the party parliamentary board for the upcoming Senate elections. The President’s Political Secretary Rukhsana Bangish said that the board was consisted of PPP Secretary General Jahangir Badar, Federal Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Dr. Faryal Talpur and Federal Law Minster Farooq H. Naik. She further stated that the board first meeting will be held on Friday today.-SANA
