Reaction of Pakistani Political leaders upon Zardari election as President of Pakistan

The head of PML-N, Mian Nawaz Sharif has congratulated Asif Ali Zardari upon his election as President of Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif has been known to telephoned the PPPP co-chairman to congratulate him over his success, and assured his (Nawaz Sharif’s) support for Zardari and democracy. Nawaz Sharif expressed his hopes that Asif Ali Zardari would eschew political affiliations and take all along the political mainstream of the Country.

PML-Q central leader and candidate from PML-Q Mushahid Hussain said while talking to media after the presidential polls on Saturday, he thanked all the workers of his party for “supporting the right and just despite the government pressure”. “Now is the time for (Asif) Zardari to come forward with a renewed vision for Pakistan, take all the stakeholders onboard and become a symbol of federation,” Mushahid Hussain stressed. “We accept the results and we hope Zardari will resign from his party position immediately,” Khwaja Saad Rafiq, leader of Sharif’s PML-N party told reporters after the election.

The Presidential candidate from PML-N Saeed-ul-Zaman Siddiqui said that the polls were held in an peaceful manner and the same situation was desired in the whole country and PML-N welcomes the polls results and the need of the hour was to address the challenges as faced by masses on priority basis.

Asif Zardari and Altaf Hussain MQM leader exchanged the greetings on the success in Presidential elections and Altaf Hussain assured the President all his possible support to run the office successfully. The Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah also greeted MQM leader Altaf Hussain on the triumph of Asif Zardari, as he was the first one to propose his name as Presidential candidate and also appreciated the efforts of Governor Dr Ishrat ul Ibad for convincing the PML-F leader Pir Pagara.

Acting President Mohammadmian Soomro on Saturday congratulated PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on his election as country’s next president. Soomro conveyed to Zardari his good wishes for the smooth functioning of his duties as head of the state. He commended Zardari’s contribution towards the revival of democracy in the country, and hoped that he would prove himself as the true symbol of federation.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman has said that genuine democratic process in Pakistan has come to its logical end after the election of Asif Ali Zardari as President of Pakistan.“The constant rows between the Presidency and Prime Minister Secretariat has ended. Today, anti-state elements, who were hatching conspiracies to break Pakistan have failed in their nefarious designs”, She said. She said now there was golden opportunity to create balance of power between the two important pillars of the state and return the powers of the Parliament taken by Presidency during dictatorial rule.She said the government believed in supremacy of parliament and would take all decisions through parliament.

“It’s not only a victory for Mr Zardari and the Pakistan People’s Party but it’s a victory for … Benazir Bhutto’s dream of a democratic political system,” said a Pakistan peoples party spokeswoman Farzana Raja as party workers chanted “long live Bhutto”.

Chief of his own faction Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Fazl-Ur-Rehman has asked government to revoke 17th amendment for revival of democracy in the country. 17th amendment instead of 58(2) b is a major reason behind non-revival of genuine democracy in the country, he said this while talking to media men outside the Parliament house on Saturday.

PML-N information secretary Ahsan Iqbal added: “We hope Zardari will remain apolitical as president.” He further said his party will support government if it brings bill in the parliament for the abolition of 17th amendment. He went on to say PML-N had reservations on the sitting supreme court. Government had not restored judges as per constitution and they were being reappointed, he added. Government had announced to reinstate judges through executive order but it was acting contrary to its pledge, he alleged.

Leadership from PML-Q Ch. Shujaat Hussain and opposition leader in the house Ch. Pervez Elahi also congratulated Asif Ali Zardari on succeeding the Presidential elections and expressed their hope that he will be a president of entire Pakistan and not only of Sindh.

The central leader from PML-N Javed Hashmi said that after a long break a civil man was going in the president’s house, who bore sufferings in Jail for more than eleven years and despite differences PML-N is happy over the presence of a civilian president in the President’s House.
He also pinned his hope with Asif Ali Zardari that during his reign, he will play an imperative role for the supremacy of the parliament, sovereignty of judiciary and for the autonomy of the institutions and on behalf of his party and the whole masses, terming the 6th September day for the victory of democracy.

Expressing his confidence over eligibility of PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari for the slot of the President, Head Awami National Party (ANP), Asfandyar Wali Khan has stated that he (Zardari) has the ability to pull the country out of the current crises.

Parliamentary leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in the Senate Professor Khurshid Ahmed has said expected Asif Ali Zardari to leave party office after becoming country’s head of state because President is a symbol Federation.
