Govt chalks out comprehensive plan for eco progress: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani says the government has chalked out comprehensive plans for economic and social development in the country. He was addressing the second Pakistan Corporation Philanthropy Awards ceremony organized by Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy in Islamabad on Friday. He said the budgetary proposals clearly reflect the government’s vision of social justice and equity. He said key measures have been proposed aiming at creating a breathing space for early economic resurgence, providing of relief to the people particularly the poor, improved social services and providing an enabling environment for the business sector to grow.

The Prime Minister said they want to see industry, manufacturing, agriculture and the energy sectors to operate at the high levels of productivity and growth. He said the government encourages the private sector to come forward and contribute proactively in Infrastructure and social sector projects. Mr. Gilani said their focus is on speedy development of SME sector and attracting local and foreign investment in the country. He said human development and poverty reduction are the corner stones of our policies and to close the social gap, education, health, clean drinking water, women development, financial assistance and low cost
housing are the focal areas.

He pointed out that People’s Rozgar Programme and Micro Finace for self-employment, Benazir Income Support programme, low cost housing all reflect our commitment to provide relief and opportunities to the common man. The Prime Minister appreciated Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy for promoting public-private partnerships in education and mobilizing philanthropic resources for social investments.

He said philanthropy is not new phenomenon in Pakistan. In fact care and compassion are the moving spirit of our religion and part of our centuries old traditions. He said the world witnessed spontaneous outpouring of compassion and generosity by the people of Pakistan both at home and abroad after the October 8, 2005 earthquake. He assured full support to the centre for philanthropy for the service of suffering humanity. He also announced twenty million rupees for Centre. Advisor to Prime Minister on Social Sector Shehnaz Wazir Ali said the government accords high priority to education, health and skilled training for jobs and safety and protection to the poorest of the poor.

She said the budget reflects strong vision of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for social sector development. The Chairman Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy said the corporate philanthropy which was two hundred and twenty-eight million rupees in the year 2000 has increased to two point three billion rupees in 2006. The Prime Minister gave away Corporate Philanthropy Awards to top companies. The companies received the awards are Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, Sitara Energy Limited, Gul Ahmad Textile Mills Limited and Sally Textile Mills Limited.-SANA
