TORONTO: Australia continues to monitor the human rights situation in Kashmir and encourages India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir to work towards a political solution, said Mr. Gary Quinlan, Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, National Security, Defence and Trade. The Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister thanked Mr. Mushtaq A. Jeelani, Executive Director of the Kashmiri-Canadian Council (KCC), for his letter to the Prime Minister regarding the unresolved Kashmir issue and intensification of systematic human rights violations against civilians in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Prime Minister [Hon. Kevin Rudd] would like me to convey his appreciation for your [Mr. Jeelani’s] kind words of support on his election victory,” wrote Mr. Quinlan. “The Australian Government welcomes progress on the ‘composite dialogue’ between Pakistan and India. Australia supports a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir dispute through continued negotiations and we encourage parties [India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir] to work towards a political solution,” states the Senior Adviser to the Prime Minister.
Mr. Quinlan concludes with an assurance: “Australia continues to monitor the human rights situation in Kashmir and we [the Government of Australia] urge parties to show restraint and respect for human rights.”
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that an early, just and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute, in line with aspirations of the people of Kashmir will help Pakistan and India to achieve their full potential. He was talking to the veteran Indian journalist, Kuldip Nayar, who called on him in here on Thursday. The Prime Minister said Pakistan will continue to take more confidence building measures to further improve ties with India in different fields. He said people to people contacts will also be increased to achieve the objectives. He said the Government is committed to the independence of judiciary and reinstatement of the judges, modalities for which are being worked out with the coalition partners.-SANA
