KABUL: Officials from the ISAF Regional Command West (RC-W) and the Herat government attended the inauguration ceremony for a newly-built bridge in the western province. Herat Governor Sayed Hussain Anwari, Mayor Mohammad Rafiq Mujaddedi, RC-W Commander Brigadier General Francesco Arena and Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Commander Colonel Giuseppe Levato attended the ceremony.
General Arena told the attendees: This bridge was donated by the Italian government. It was built with the strong commitment of Italian PRT and the Afghan people. It shows clearly the great collaboration existing between Afghanistan and the international security force.” On the occasion, the Herat governor and mayor expressed their gratitude for the important work. “The bridge will bring great benefits to the population, relieving the local economy as well,” Anwari said, according to a press statement from the NATO-led force.
Mujaddedi also thanked ISAF, saying: “People living in Herat City and in neighbouring Injil district villages have re-established a direct link.” The Kartha bridge replaces a heavily damaged bridge, ruined by the spring floods in 2007. The construction that started in July 2007 was financed with Italian funds of around 400.000 euros. The final draft was carried out by the Italian PRT Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Teams engineers.-SANA
