Investigations against Dr AQ Khan have proven that the renowned nuclear scientist had no links with al-Qaeda and that he helped Iran and Libya to divert the US focus from the Pakistani nuclear programme.
ISLAMABAD: Renowned nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan has said he felt proud that nation holds him in high esteem after Quaid-e-Azam. Talking to Geo News, he said that he had done everything for the betterment of Pakistan and nation was well aware of the fact that who was patriot and who wasn’t. Responding to a question, Dr. A. Q. Khan said people, who were opposing Pakistan’s nuclear program, plotted against him. He said it was highly unfortunate that foreign conspiracies find help from within the country.
Dr. A. Q. Khan said he was glad over the fact nation holds him in high esteem. Dr. Qadir said he was in the custody of the army. He said people were facing many problems and even flour was not available at economical price. He hoped that his case would soon be settled. He also lauded the role of media.

Also, he was tricked into making the infamous confession on the national TV by President Musharraf and Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain was the man who convinced Dr Khan to confess that he was involved in nuclear proliferation just to save Pakistan, which he maintains was a great mistake. Dr Khan claimed that it was not only Shujaat but also President Pervez Musharraf, who assured him on February 4, 2004 that nothing bad will happen to him after the confessional statement and that he would be free to move anywhere in Pakistan but unfortunately he was betrayed.
Highly-placed government sources have claimed that it was not established during the four-year-long investigations that Dr Khan was providing nuclear technology to Iran and Libya just for money. The probe found that the main reason behind nuclear proliferation was because Dr Khan disliked the US policies. Initially, the US authorities had claimed that Dr Khan was in contact with al-Qaeda leader Khalid Sheikh Muhammad but it could not be proven.
Abdul Qadeer Khan ( born April 1, 1936) is a Pakistani scientist and metallurgical engineer widely regarded as the founder of Pakistan’s nuclear program. His middle name is occasionally rendered as Quadeer, Qadir or Gadeer, and his given names are usually abbreviated to A.Q.
In January 2004, Khan confessed to having been involved in a clandestine international network of nuclear weapons technology proliferation from Pakistan to Libya, Iran and North Korea. On February 5, 2004, the President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, announced that he had pardoned Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, who is widely seen as a national hero. In an August 23, 2005 interview with Kyodo News General Pervez Musharraf confirmed that Khan had supplied gas centrifuges and gas centrifuge parts to North Korea and, possibly, an amount of uranium hexafluoride.
On May 30th, 2008, ABC News reported that Kahn, who previously confessed to his involvement with Iran and North Korea, now denies involvement with the spread of nuclear arms to those countries. He explained in an interview with ABC News that the Pakistani government and President Pervez Musharraf forced him to be a “scapegoat” for the “national interest.” He denies ever traveling to Iran or Lybia and claims that North Korea’s nuclear program was well advanced before his visit.
