ISLAMABAD: Peoples Lawyers Forum will fully support the constitutional package that Pakistan Peoples Party will introduce in the parliament after building consensus with the coalition partners. A meeting of the lawyers from Peoples Lawyers Forum from NWFP and Punjab held at the Zardari house assured the PPP Co- Chairperson Senator Asif Ali Zardari that the lawyers’ community will stand fully behind the party in its endeavor to reform the institutions.

Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chairman Senator Asif Ali Zardari said that PPP had made a commitment with the people of Pakistan that it will work to change the system in the country and it was moving in that direction with full dedication. Addressing the meeting he said that the constitutional package that the PPP government is planning to present is aimed at restoring the supremacy of the parliament and introducing a system where executive is answerable to the people of Pakistan through their elected representative.

He said that PPP not only wants to restore the deposed judges but also wants to introduce comprehensive constitutional reforms so that in the future all institutions of the state work in accordance with their roles defined in the constitution. He reminded that Shaheed Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto had laid her life for bringing democracy and institutional rule in the country.

He stressed that now was the right time for such constitutional package to be introduced and if this opportunity was not taken up then it may never come back. The participants of the meeting said that they were at the fore front of the judges’ movement since March 9, 2007 and they were the ones who started the momentum all over the country but they now believed that a constitutional reform package was required to settle such issues once for all.

It was decided in the meeting that the completed draft of constitutional package will be presented at the Peoples Lawyer’s Forum on May 31st and lawyers input will be sought on that. Tributes to Shaheed Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto were also read out at the meeting. Prominent among those who assisted Senator Zardari in the meeting included Federal Minister for Law Farooq H Naek, Secretary General PPP Jehangir Badar, Advocate Khurram Khosa and others.-SANA
