Failure of talks will be disastrous: Malik
Karachi: Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Yasin Malik on Monday called for expediting talks between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue. “We want the dialogue process to be accelerated to find a solution. The Kashmir issue should not be kept pending,” Malik told reporters after his arrival in this Pakistani port city. Malik is in Pakistan to hold an exhibition of his 114- day Safar-e-Azadi (journey for freedom) which he conducted in 2007.
The Kashmiri people are a “fundamental party” to the Kashmir issue and “must be included in the dialogue process”, he said. Malik said that Pakistan and India had held talks for four years but could not “deliver anything.” This had caused disappointment among people who were asked to show patience, he said. “If the dialogue fails to give any hope to Kashmiris, they will be pushed into an extreme situation. Kashmiris are running out of patience and things will be worse than they were in 1990 if the talks make no progress soon,” he said, referring to the armed rebellion that began in Jammu and Kashmir in the late 1980s.
Malik also said dialogue between Pakistan and India is the last hope for the people of Kashmir. “I hope better sense will prevail. The leaders of both countries have met but where is the solution? Kashmir is not a border dispute but it is the question of the fate of a nation,” he said. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service was like the “provision of oxygen” and the walls dividing the people of two parts of Kashmir should fall like the Berlin Wall, he said. Malik will hold an exhibition on the “Freedom March” organised by the JKLF across the Kashmir Valley last year. Besides photographs on the march, a documentary on the campaign will be screened in Islamabad in the first week of June.-
