May 12: Lawyers, civil society takes out rallies

ISLAMABAD: Lawyers and members of the civil society brought out a rally in various cities of Pakistan Monday on completion of one year of 12th May incident in Karachi. Rally began from D-Chowk and dispersed peacefully in front of the Supreme Court building. On May 12 last years violence erupted in Karachi city that left almost 50 killed and several injured in the city on the occasion of the arrival of the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to address Sindh High Court Bar Association.

Talking to media the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan said there would be no compromise on reinstatement of the deposed judges. He said an All Pakistan Lawyers Convention would be held in Lahore on 17th of this month to draw future line of action.

Lahore Bar Association also organized a protest meeting to commemorate the incident of 12th of May last year. President of Lahore Bar, Manzoor Qadir presided over the meeting. In their speeches, the speakers demanded investigation of the tragic incident and those responsible should be unmasked. Later, they took out a protest demonstration.

In Karachi, the lawyers boycotted proceedings of Sindh High Court, City Court and Malir Court. Judges and staff were present in the court and some lawyers also attended the courts.
