PPP clarifies news item regarding Prime Ministerial candidate

Submitted by Rubab Saleem on February 6, 2008 – 4:50 pmNo Comment

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Thursday clarified that no decision had yet been taken on the party’s candidate for the office of the Prime Minister and that a US based weekly, has incorrectly inferred that Asif Ali Zardari has staked claims for the office of the Prime Minister.

Spokesperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Senator Farhatullah Babar said that no decision had yet been taken on the party’s candidate for the office of the Prime Minister. A section of the press Wednesday, quoting PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s interview to a US based weekly, has incorrectly inferred that Zardari has staked claims for the office of the Prime Minister, he said.

He said that the party has not even discussed the issue let alone taking a decision on it. He said that in the said interview Asif Ali Zardari, in reply to a question whether he was interested in the office of Prime Minister, had also stated that an aspirant for the office of the Prime Minister had to be a member of the Parliament and that he was not running for
this Parliament at this time.

The PPP’s first and foremost priority at the present time is to concentrate on the coming elections even though the regime has adopted institutional measures to rig them, the spokesman added.-SANA
