CIDA, UK delegations visit FJA

ISLAMABAD: The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Governance Exploratory Wednesday visited the Federal Judicial Academy (FJA) and discussed various issues of mutual interest. On their arrival at the Academy, the delegation was received by Hashim Abro, and other senior officials of the Academy. In their academic deliberation with the Director General Moazzam Hayat and the faculty members, the delegation discussed a host of issues pertaining to judicial education both in Pakistan and Canada, capacity building and the role of FJA in the training of judicial officers.

On the occasion, DG of the Academy also introduced the faculty members who are retired district and session judges and noted judicial educators, with the delegation. Later the delegation visited various parts of the Academy, in particular, library, IT lab, Model Court Room, and others.

The mission members included: Mr. Gabe Ferrazzl, Team Leader (Ottawa-Canada) Mr. Tod Droger, Governance Specialist, CIDA Policy Branch (Ottawa-Canada), Mr. Shehryar Sarwar, Governance Advisor, Asia Branch (Ottawa-Canada), Ms, Pamela Sequeria, Program Development Canadian High Commission (Islamabad-Pakistan), Ms. Mussarrat Bashir, local consultant (Islamabad-Pakistan).

About the Mission visit to Pakistan, Hashim Abro, spokesman of the FJA, said that the Mission is on visit to Pakistan from the January 28, 2008 with the purpose to explore democratic accountability issues and challenges facing Pakistan with an eye to identifying possible future programming focus.

Democratic Accountability for CIDA includes human rights, rule of law, public sector effectiveness and institutional capacity building, security and stability and democratic participation and accountability, said Abro. Earlier, the two-member UK- Pakistan Judicial Protocol on Children matters delegation comprising Ms Hellen Rawlins, Head of Consular Section UK High Commission, and Mr. Albert David Consular also visited the Academy and exchanged views on various issues of mutual concern.

The delegation was delighted to learn about teaching and training of the subjects, including DNA test teaching, Child Labour, Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws and Environmental Laws to the trainee judges.-SANA
