Officials reviews latest situation of Avian Influenza

ISLAMABAD: A high level meeting under the chairmanship of Secretary Health Khushnood Akhtar Lashari reviewed latest situation of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu).Representatives of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL), World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization, UNICEF and senior officials of the Ministry of Health attended the meeting.

Secretary Health showed satisfaction over the response to the situation and stressed on the need for better coordination between the Ministries of Health and MINFAL and the provincial government. He said a media campaign is being launched to create awareness about preventive measures.

The participants showed satisfaction over the compensation process given to poultry farmers for culling the infected birds. The meeting was informed that the last outbreak of the Bird Flu occurred on November 30 in NWFP and culling of the infected chicken was done within 48 hours. Since then the situation is under complete control and all the standing operating procedures are followed.

The meeting was apprised that a 3-member team of experts of WHO is in Pakistan to assist the federal and provincial health departments in providing guidelines to contain the spread of Avian Influenza.-SANA
